Victorian jewelers often found inspiration in the jewels and arts of the past. Among the many historical styles of jewelry revived during the Victorian era (1840 to 1900) were Etruscan, Greek, Egyptian, Celtic, Gothic and Renaissance. This diminutive brooch is a beautiful example of the jewels that were inspired by the Renaissance.
The brooch features a portrait of a Renaissance gentleman painstakingly painted in richly colored enamels. The enamel portrait is surrounded by a 14kt gold frame set with 40 small pearls. The gentleman's cap is accented with two enamel feathers that are anchored with a small rose-cut diamond. This brooch dates from the final decades of the 19th century (circa 1890). At some point during this brooch's long life, the pin stem was repaired. The repair was done well. A trace of jeweler's solder can be seen in the above photo near the base of the pin stem. Otherwise this jewel has survived the past 100 years in excellent condition.
